Direction to follow to achieve heavy duty TANK CLEANING for heavy fuel oil, sludge, oil, grease, wax, and paraffin removal:

1. Pre-Cleaning / Preparation

• Where operationally possible, remove free oil and pumpable sludge before chemical cleaning.

• Pre-wash the tank using warm or hot high-pressure water to remove loose contamination and expose the heavier deposits to the chemical treatment. The supplied reference similarly recommends high-pressure warm-water prewashing before application.

• Removing loose material before chemical treatment considerably improves chemical efficiency and reduces consumption.

2. Recirculation Method

• Prepare the required cleaning solution according to the severity of contamination.

• As a general starting point:

• Minimum concentration: approximately 0.5%

• For severe contamination, a stronger concentration may be required following an onboard trial.

• Circulate the cleaning solution through the tank, pipelines and associated equipment so that all contaminated surfaces receive adequate contact.

• Heating considerably improves the removal of heavy fuel oils, aged hydrocarbons and sludge.

• For difficult contamination, temperatures approaching 70°C can substantially improve cleaning performance where the tank construction, coating, cargo history and operating conditions permit.

• The reference TDS likewise specifies a minimum 0.5% solution for recirculation and reports best performance around 70°C.

• After cleaning, drain the contaminated solution and rinse thoroughly with fresh water or seawater as appropriate.

3. Rock-and-Roll Method

This method is particularly suitable for tank cleaning while the vessel is underway.

• 0.5-1.0 litre RXSOL Tank Cleaner Super S per 1,000 litres of water.
• Allow the solution to remain in contact with the bottom deposits for approximately 2–6 hours.
• This concentrated initial contact helps penetrate, soften and loosen hardened sludge and petroleum deposits.

• Increase the water level to approximately 30% of tank capacity and allow natural vessel movement to provide agitation.
• Maintain contact for approximately 1–2 days, depending upon contamination and voyage conditions.
• The supplied reference describes the same initial concentration, contact period and 30% filling stage.

• Drain → inspect → rinse → repeat if necessary.

4. Heated Soaking / Ballast Method

• For heavily contaminated fuel-oil tanks, determine the required amount of RXSOL Tank Cleaner Super S and introduce it into the tank.
• Fill the tank to approximately 75% capacity with water and provide heating where possible.
• For severe deposits, maintaining the cleaning emulsion at approximately 60°C for an extended contact period can substantially improve penetration and sludge removal.
• The reference procedure specifies maintaining the emulsion at approximately 60°C for 3-5 days where possible, followed by deballasting and repeated seawater rinsing until the discharge runs clear.
• For exceptionally heavy contamination, the treatment may need to be repeated.
